Safety lockout hasps are simple devices that allow multiple padlocks to be used within a permit to work system when isolating one energy source. The lockout hasp is placed through the isolating point. Each person carrying out maintenance/service work attaches and locks in place their own unique individually keyed padlock through the lockout hasp. This ensures energy cannot be restored until all the padlocks have been removed.
i) Some reasons to lockout
• To prevent power driven equipment from being set in motion and endangering workers.
• To prevent unauthorised persons from operating dangerous machinery etc.
• To prevent the escape of steam, compressed air, liquid or gas which might be harmful to those working on a pipeline.
• To prevent damage to partially dismantled machinery.
ii) Some instances when lockout should take place
• Whenever there is a danger of unexpected start-up of equipment.
• Whenever there is a danger of unexpected release of stored energy.
• Whenever a risk assessment shows there is a potential danger
• eg. when a guard or other safety device has to be removed, cleaning or oiling machinery with moving parts, clearing jammed mechanisms etc.
